Echocardiogram
About the Test
An echocardiogram, also called an "echo," is a harmless, painless test that uses ultrasound to generate a picture of your heart to help your doctor make a correct diagnosis. During the test, a small microphone-like device, called a transducer, is held against the chest. The transducer harmlessly sends ultrasound waves that bounce off the parts of the heart. A computer reconstructs a picture of your heart on to a TV screen. This image can be recorded on disk, videotape or printed on paper.
Echocardiograms help to evaluate:
- Congenital and acquired heart defects
- The size of the heart and its chambers
- The function of the heart muscle and heart valves
- Excessive fluid in the membrane that surrounds the heart
At Danbury Hospital, the echocardiographic information is obtained by trained ultrasound personnel and interpreted by specially trained physicians.
Preparation
No special preparations are necessary before you come to the lab for the test. Make sure you wear a two-piece outfit, as you well need to change into a gown after you remove your clothing above the waist.
What Happens During the Test
Gel is applied to your chest to help conduct sound waves and echo leads. The lights in the room are dimmed. The echocardiography technician guides the transducer over the chest to obtain different views of your heart. You may be asked to change positions or to exhale or hold your breath for a few seconds (air in your lungs can affect the echo images).
Length of Test
The entire exam usually takes 20 to 45 minutes, depending on the number of views.
After the Test
There are no restrictions after the examination is completed and you can return to your normal activities after the test. Results are not available to you at that time. Your physician will be sent results usually within one working day.
